Norman is flying to Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz Airport OEDM in the central part of Saudi Arabia this morning. He departed just before 7.00 am (IST) flying in an easterly direction. The weather is a warm 25 °C with scattered clouds at about 1,000 feet / 3,000 meters and a south easterly breeze. Visability is at 6 miles / 10 km and there is a slight chance of rain.
This will be a flight of just over 300 miles / 480 km. As Norman often uses roads for way finding he will probably follow road 40 then road 50 which brings him direct to Al Dawdmi. The airport lies 18 miles / 30 km west of the town of Al Dawadmi and it is one of the most modern airports in Saudi Arabia.

Amazing circular formations on the ground as you are approaching the landing spot today - are they fields of crops?
ReplyDeleteTeaching my grandmother to suck eggs here no doubt, but a bit concerned to see you backtracking a couple of times according to the SPOT map. As of right now the airfield is some distance to the north-west of you, and is itself to the north-east of the formation of large circles on the ground that I mentioned earlier. Many apologies if I'm speaking out of turn here but I'm a bit worried!
ReplyDeleteDon't fret Louise, I'm worried too by the sudden turn around. It must be one heck of a job trying to get the right headings. Orientation comes to mind over a great expanse of desert between you and your goal, but what is Norman up to? Lost? Waiting, but trying not to get too hot under collar.

I think I know his plan Louise. Trying to back track to find a road. Follow that until reaching the 40 road that was supposed to be the way to his destination. If that's the strategy, then Norm has got himself together(Hopefully).
ReplyDeleteWe're with you Norm. I wonder if he has a radio on board.
Roger
Hi Roger,
ReplyDeleteI wasn't too concerned with the first bit of backtracking as I could see from the SPOT satellite picture that there were buildings (and therefore probably people) where he had landed, but the second time he appeared to be in a very bleak spot! I feel a bit daft posting directions on here I suppose, but I'd rather do that and look stupid than say nothing and find Norman's in serious trouble and it might have helped.
I do think you're right about the roads. In any event I think the airfield I could see might not have been his intended destination anyway, haha!
It's all fascinating stuff, and I'm looking forward to see where Gyrox is off to next.
